Welcome to the Wunderkammer!

"Wunderkammer"
True Love Gallery, Seattle
Curated by Siolo Thompson
July 12 - August 8, 2012

This collection of artwork pays tribute to the early days of
scientific and medical discovery, the Gentleman Scientist of ages past
and their Cabinets of Curiosity. The human drive to collect, catalog,
examine and understand the natural world is inexorable. From Audubon
drawings to medical encyclopedias, Natural History museums to
children's insect collections as a species our curiosity is boundless.
By understanding and naming the world we exercises dominion over it
but it is also a way of worship. The wonder, beauty and terrible power
of nature is evident in every delicate leaf, each articulate bone.

"Wunderkammer," will showcase the talents of artists with an
emphasis on illustration. The collection will feature drawings of a
botanical, scientific and medical nature. You will also see portraits
of those early distinguished men of science, curious objects, medical
case study examples and other wonders.

Liquid Assets ~ Ashland OR - [May-28-2012]

My very first visit to Liquid Assets consisted of delicious bacon wrapped dates, a lovely 12 year scotch and artwork by noticeably talented artists. Each section of this wine bar, which features 20+ wines from Oregon, California and France, is devoted to a different artist. Curator Marsa Morse, who follows museum guidelines and standards, has an excellent eye for picking original, intriguing paintings and photographs which perfectly complement the space. I am honored to be part of her selection for the months of May and June. See new paintings during Ashlands first Friday art walk June 1st from 5-10pm. The show runs thru June 22nd.

Book Publication ~ Look Up Here: 5 years of NW Urban & Contemporary Art - [May-27-2012]

I am honored to have been included in the book Look Up Here, published by Bherd Studios in Seattle. The book features 33 Pacific Northwest contemporary urban artists who are influentual in the Seattle art scene.

The book may be purchased at Amazon.com.

As excerpted from the Foreword by David Francis…

The range of media is extensive, from aerosol spray, acrylic, and oil paint, to stencil, pen & ink drawing, collage, sculpture, photography, encaustic, and street-based installation and performance. In just five years, Bherd has created a rich mixture of both lowbrow and highbrow that they bring together under the “urban and contemporary” umbrella.

Looking at the artwork and reading the texts of the 33 artists included here, it’s also apparent that there’s a strong focus on nature that we might expect from the Northwest. Beyond the obvious connection with birds, there’s also a fascinating hybrid or cyborg quality to much of the flora and fauna where organic shapes are grafted on to humans, machines, or robots. Nature also appears as a series of scientific specimens, and there’s a wonderful, collective take on the 19th century (Victorian period), with gothic horror, ornate frames, and steampunk paraphernalia.

“Inside Out”

Showing from Oct 8 – Oct 29

Opening Reception: Fri, Oct 8 from 6-10pm

Bherd Studios Gallery presents the urban contemporary work of Seattle artists: Michelle Anderst, Joe Vollan and Chris Sheridan.  Each artists work is themed around the inner workings of the mechanical, human anatomy and the soul.

Anderst explores the relationships between organic structure such as bones, veins & nerves to man-made structures such as circuitry and computer boards. She’s known for pairing “the insides” with old fashioned vintage wallpaper which creates an unusual feminine elegance to her compositions.

Vollan uses his signature style of surreal and macabre scenes that are inhabited by skeletal animals and robots to evoke a sense of wonderment, relevant to the fantastic and bizarre worlds he creates.

Sheridan’s work explores the essence of humanity and the soul. His work depicts scenes from myths and folklore that teach about morality, as well as delving into the insights of human nature. His strong illustrative background provides beautifully crafted imagery on oil and canvas.

The opening reception is held in conjunction with the 2nd Friday Monthly Artwalk in Greenwood-Phinney as well as with October’s Arts Crush festival.

An Elegant Collection of Data Points - [Oct-01-2009]

Anderst's La Familia exhibition will explore the relationship between organic structure, like bones and nerves, to man-made structures such as circuit boards. Her work visually pursues a question: how do the natural and the synthetic co-exist and interact with each other? She strives to ask these analytical questions while illustrating the visual elegance of her subjects. The highlight of her collection is the wall of beetles.

Artist Statement

Michelle Anderst's intricate and unique synthesis of the botanical, the mechanical, and the anatomical truly exemplifies the Victorian spirit of observation, celebrating an intense fascination with the natural world and the parallels between machine efficiency and the inner-workings of living organisms. In circuit boards she sees the winding paths of nerve impulses; in collections of veins, the elegant curl of plant vines. Although we often associate the bones and organs of our bodies with death, her exquisite compositions are not an expression of morbid destiny, but instead an affirmation of the beauty of being and the amazing design of natural and manmade structures.

Using various elements from such distinct disciplines as biology, engineering, and medicine, Anderst reveals the ingenuity of nature mirrored in man's artificial creations, including art itself. The complexities of and disparities between each of these scientific domains seem to dissolve into an organic whole, creating a splendid visual representation of the resilient, reoccurring, and unifying elements of life and matter.

Currently based in Seattle, Anderst graduated from Southern Oregon Art Academy in 2004 and went on to recieve her Scientific Illustration certificate at the University of Washington in 2010.
